When it comes to transforming a house into a true home, sometimes a complete overhaul is necessary. This is exactly what Laura and her husband Bill embarked on, and their story is a testament to the power of renovation and design.
A Home's Journey to Comfort and Style
For two decades, Laura and Bill lived in a house that, despite its size, lacked functionality and warmth. The rooms were ill-suited for their needs, often cold and uninviting, and the exterior left much to be desired. It was a space that, over time, became more of a burden than a haven.
"They were the wrong size and shape, and mostly far too cold," Laura explains.
This all-in project, a complete redesign and renovation, took a remarkable 14 months to complete. The couple decided to move out during the process, a decision that, in Laura's words, was "liberating" as it allowed for a comprehensive transformation of every room in the house.

The key to their successful renovation was finding the right professionals. After meeting with several architects who didn't quite grasp their vision, Laura and Bill took a different approach. "We knew pretty soon when we met them that they would be right for us," Laura says.

Decluttering: The First Step
One of the first steps in the renovation process was a thorough declutter. LifeEdit, a local service, helped the couple focus on what they truly wanted to keep and what could be let go. This not only prepared them for the upcoming changes but also provided valuable practice in making decisions, a skill that would be essential throughout the renovation.
"The declutter got us into the change process and cut down on the need for things to go into storage," Laura explains.
Creating a Social Hub
A key goal for Laura and Bill was to create a social area where the family could congregate and relax. Their previous home lacked such a space, with a small, cold kitchen, a dark family room, and a worn-out conservatory. TAP Architects seized the opportunity to make radical changes at the back of the house, transforming it into a wonderful open-plan area that is now the heart of the home.
"The snug / dining / kitchen extension is our favourite place in the whole house. It's such a great heart for the house and a wonderful place to be at any time of the day or night," Laura shares.
The extension, with its stylish and spacious design, offers a warm and light-filled space with a gorgeous view of the garden. The concept is perfect, and the Douglas fir beams add a modern touch, creating a unique and eye-catching feature.
A Home Transformed
The transformation of Laura and Bill's home is a remarkable journey. From cold and uninviting rooms to a stylish and comfortable living space, the renovation has brought light, shade, drama, and calm to their lives. With the addition of modern heating systems, underfloor heating, an air source heat pump, and solar panels, the house is now a comfortable and energy-efficient haven.
"We still have to pinch ourselves to prove that it's real. Rooms that were too cold to use for most of the year are now warm and stylish, and used frequently," Laura reflects.
